Wrapping up the First talk of the Fine Art Talk series: The Art of Ceramics

The first Fine Art Talk was held today at the Maldives National University. Titled, “The Art of Ceramics” it was held in association with the National Centre for the Arts and Maldives National University. The talk featured two ceramic artists, Mr. Mohammed Rezaur Rahman from Bangladesh and Ms. Gao Yanhui (Glory) from China.

Ms. Glory kicked off the talk with a brief overview of the history of ceramic in Tangshan, China. She further spoke about the workshops she has been hosting in association with the Tangshan local government. Mr. Rezaur’s talk was focused on terracotta in the Bengal region. Speaking on his research findings, he explored the history of the art form and analyzed the different designs and purposes that terracotta was used for.

The varying opportunities for Maldivians to practice ceramic art were discussed towards the end of the talk during the question and answer session. As the duo holds ceramic workshops in collaboration with the local government of Tangshan in addition to giving lectures and talks, they offered the opportunity to interested artists in the Maldives to take part in their workshops.
