A memorial exhibition organised by friends and family of the late Mustafa Azmy is on going at the National Art Gallery. Presenting the work of one of the most skilled woodturners in the Maldives, this exhibition will be open until the 28th of August 2019.
Woodturning is a practice where a wood lathe is used in addition to hand-held tools to create a shape that is symmetrical around the axis of rotation. It is a craft that requires immense patience and precision. Azmy, who was a master at this craft, was preparing for his own exhibition prior to his untimely death in April of this year.
With more than 194 items on display, the impressive woodturning work at the exhibition are items that he had prepared for his exhibition.
The Head of IT department at STO, Azmy received international exposure and admiration for his work through his Instagram account where he displayed his handiwork. He received orders for his work from countries such as America, United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The intricate details of the handiwork and the meticulous attention to detail that has gone into the preparation of each piece shows his passion towards woodturning and offers viewers a glimpse of his incredible talent.
